10:58 a.m. - May. 08, 2003 of the 3rd Annual Dragon Boat Festival, taking place Saturday, May 17, downtown. As a part of the festival, there is an authentic Dragon Boat Raceand I will be paddling down the ever-so-lovely Buffalo Bayou, as a member of the "Sky Dragon" team. We are the defending champions and we have some stiff competition. Along with the race, there will be many entertainers, including Indonesian Gamelan Dancers, Korean Farm Dancers, Anjali Indian Dancers, Shaolin Kung Fuand lots of great food! What: 3rd Annual Dragon Boat Festival Where: Buffalo Bayou, Allens Landing (NE corner of Commerce & Main Streets) When: Saturday, May 17 The races* begin @ 8:30AM and should conclude by 3PM ~ however the festival will continue til 5:30PM *There will be 6 heats (races), consisting of 18 boats totalwith 3 boats racing in each of the 6 heats(at least, this is my understanding.) What the heck is a Dragon Boat, anyways!? Wellwe use a traditional Hong Kong style Dragon Boat which is approximately 50 long, 4 wide and weighs a mere 600 pounds (gulp!) In this boat will be 20 paddlers, 1 drummer (lucky stiff!) and 1 steersperson.
